Catclaw Acacia - Acacia greggii

The Catclaw Acacia (Acacia greggii) is a medium sized broadleaf evergreen tree for arid gardens, landscapes and naturalizing. This variety has a rambling habit that makes it look shrubby, but also deprives it of the structure to prune like a shrub. The Rambling branches are one of my favorite things about this plant, even more so than the very fragrant flowers. It draws the name "Catclaw" for the curved thorns emerging from the stems and branches. Wattles (Acacia) can naturalize and be invasive in warmer climates. The native species is most common in production.
