Hornbeam Maple - Acer carpinifolium

The Hornbeam Maple (Acer carpinifolium) is a small deciduous tree commonly used as a hedge or screen. It is often "topped" and sheared, particularly in Europe. The plant has the formal look of a hornbeam, the hardiness of a maple, and the smaller leaves make less of a mess in formal situations. This is one of the last trees to color so early freezes may cause the leaf to brown and stay on through the early winter. The native species is most common in production.
