The Royal Burgundy Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea 'Royal Burgndy') is a small deciduous shrub for landscapes and gardens that is ideal for hedging. This species has a deep burgundy leaf in spring, summer and fall. It is easily controlled with light pruning, and shows drought, disease and insect resistance. The plant is very thorny and difficult to keep clean of leaves and debris. This is a cultivated variety of Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea.
