River Birch - Betula nigra

The River Birch (Betula nigra) is a medium sized deciduous tree for landscapes, gardens and naturalizing. This variety is very drought tolerant. The exfoliating bark provides year round interest and small leaves provide a dappled shade. This variety also has excellent fall color and is borer resistant. This plant is difficult to underplant due to a shallow root system. Expect heavy leaf drop when transplanting. There are more cultivars of this species in production.
