Thorny Bougainvillea - Bougainvillea spicata

The Thorny Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spicata) is a large flowering shrub or climbing vine for landscapes and gardens. This parent species is not quite as showy as the cultivated varieties of it. It is also more likely to be found as a shrub due to the difficulty of handling the thorns to train it as a vine. The thorns are brutal. Unless you start training this as a young plant, you might as well let it do what it wants. There are more cultivars of this species in production.
