Pindo Palm - Butia capitata

The Pindo Palm (Butia capitata) is a small broadleaf evergreen tree for landscpes and gardens. This is a nice trunk forming palm with the trunk ususally staying under 2 feet in diameter. The fronds are extra long and can often reach the ground. The fruit is often used to make jelly. The old growth typcally dries and hangs on. The leaves also have spines making this species a little painful to handle. If you do not intend to use the fruit, remove the flower after blooming to avoid 50 pound of fruit per bloom. There are more cultivars of this species in production.
