The Cascalote (Caesalpinia cacalaco) is a deciduous or broadleaf evergreen tree for landscapes and gardens. This tree has prolific panicles of pea-like flowers in summer followed by attractive red seed pods. This tree also has nice exfoliating bark. This plant will typically defoliate in zone 9 over winter but may retain the leaves in zones 10 and 11. The native species is most common in production.
