Shagbark Hickory - Carya ovata

The Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata) is a native nut bearing tree that is sought more for its wood and timber. This is a solid upright shade tree that still allows for under growth. This variety is known mostly for the "Shaggy" bark. The leaf can develop a fungus and drop before achieving fall color. The native species is most common in production.
