Summersweet, Sweet Pepperbush - Clethra alnifolia

The Summersweet, Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia) is a medium sized deciduous flowering shrub native to the United States and growing in popularity in landscapes and gardens. The attractive fragrant flowers draw butterflies and birds. The plant is disease resistant and has a cinnamon bark that exfoliates on older plants for winter interest. This plant has no negatives of note. There are several cultivars and subspecies that have been moving out of production in the past few years.
