Rock Fig - Ficus petiolaris

The Rock Fig (Ficus petiolaris) is a medium broadleaf evergreen tree for tropical climates often used as a house plant. This plant makes a really nice shade tree in the garden. The blooms come and go all year but are hardly noticed except for the fruit they leave behind. Of constricted in a sidewalk cut or planter the trunk can develop a really neat bulbous base. This plant is a spider mite magnet in full sun. They don't seem to be as bad in cooler locations. This plant can also defoliate in zone 9. There are more cultivars of this species in production.
