Salal - Gaultheria shallon

The Salal (Gaultheria shallon) is a large broadleaf evergreen shrub native only to the Western United States. This plant has very durable evergreen foliage, a beautiful Lily of the Valley type flower in spring, and a black berry that persists through summer and into winter. This species is very frost sensitive and mainly found at lower elevations or in sheltered locations. The native species is most common in production.
