The Northern Bayberry, Candleberry (Myrica pensylvanica) is a broadleaf evergreen shrub for landscapes, gardens, and naturalizing that is native to the Eastern United States. This plant has glossy evergreen leaves that are fragrant when crushed. The leaves defoliate when new buds emerge. Males hold leaves all year round, while females defoliate in winter due to the berries. It also has a suckering habit that is great for hedges and naturalizing. This plant has no negatives of note. The native species is most common in production.
