Engelmann Prickly Pear - Opuntia engelmannii

The Engelmann Prickly Pear (Opuntia engelmannii) is a groundcovering cactus for landscapes, gardens, and naturalizing. This is one of the hardiest cactus with a prolific yellow flower and beautiful red fruit. I have seen this plant grow for decades as far north as zone 5. Just because it will grow in zone 5 doesn't mean it should. It usually looks very tattered in zones 5 and 6. There are more cultivars of this species in production. This plant is commonly referred to as a cactus, but due to the "Woody" parts is technically a succulent.
