The Empress Tree (Paulownia tomentosa) is a flowering tree found naturalized along the east coast and Appalachian mountains. This plant has showy purple flowers in spring, big shade producing leaves, and can grow three to o five feet per year. This is an extremely invasive species and probably should not be planted at all as the seeds travel and cannot be contained. The native species is most common in production.
