Lombardy Poplar - Populus nigra 'Italica'

The Lombardy Poplar (Populus nigra 'Italica') is a fast growing columnar deciduous tree for landscapes. This plant can grow up to five feet per year. It is often sold as whips in a bag of ten for planting hedges. This is the cheapest, fastest, and most short lived screen you can buy. The upper branches develop a canker that often kills the tree within ten years. The tree rarely reaches fifty feet in the Unites States. This is a naturally occurring cultivated variety of Populus Nigra.
