Hybrid Mesquite - Prosopis chilensis X flexuosa

The Hybrid Mesquite (Prosopis chilensis X flexuosa) is a medium sized fast growing tree for landscapes and gardens. This is a sought after wood for fuel and the flavoring in BBQ. These naturally occuring hybrids of the Southwest are much more ornamental in nature than their parent species. This plant is very thorny, and the drop lots of litter, but are virtually bulletproof. This is a naturally occurring cross between Prosopis chilensis and Prosopis flexuosa that is considered native to the desert Southwest. Images of other Prosopis will aid in identification.
