The Black Mesquite (Prosopis nigra) is a medium sized fast growing tree for landscapes and gardens. This is a sought after wood for fuel and the flavoring in BBQ. This species is named for the almost black bark. This plant is very thorny, and the drop lots of litter, but are virtually bulletproof. The native species is most common in production. Other than the bark, this tree is very similar to Prosopis chilensis and photos of that species will aid in identification.
