Newport Flowering Plum - Prunus 'Newport'

The Newport Flowering Plum (Prunus 'Newport') is a medium sized flowering tree for landscapes and gardens. This plant is grown for it's burgundy foliage and delicate flower in spring. It is supposed to be fruitless, but may produce a very small berry similar to the wild cherry. Flowering cherries are prone to winter kill from late freezes. Winter water is the best prevention. This plant used to be classified as a variety of Prunus cistena, but some infidelity was discovered on the in-laws part and it was kicked out of the house.
