Japanese Flowering Cherry - Prunus serrulata 'Shiro-fugen'

The Japanese Flowering Cherry (Prunus serrulata 'Shiro-fugen') is a medium sized flowering tree for landscapes and gardens. This variety is fruitless with double pink to white flowers in spring. Emergent leaves are a little burgundy and produce a great fall color. This is probably the most under planted of the species and is not grafted so it gets a great trunk. Flowering cherries are prone to winter kill from late freezes. Winter water is the best prevention. This variety is often confused with 'Kwanzan', but the flowers are lighter in color and 'Kwazan' is grafted.
