The Red Elderberry (Sambcus racemosa) is a large shrub or small tree for landscapes, gardens, and naturalizing. If you are going to plant an Elderberry this is the one. It has the nicest habit, flower, and berry. The berry is coveted for jam, pies, and wine but is rather nasty by itself. This species can be aggressive (not invasive as it is native), and needs room to roam. There are more cultivars of this species in production.
