The Purple Leaf Elderberry (Sambucus nigra 'Purpurea') is a large shrub or small tree for landscapes and gardens. The leaves on this variety emerge burgundy to offset the pink flowers. The color can fade in the shade. The berry is coveted for jam, pies, and wine but is rather nasty by itself. This cultivar can revert to the species which is an exotic invasive and should not be planted where it can escape. This plant is a cultivated variety of Sambucus nigra, an exotic invasive species.
