Carolina Hemlock - Tsuga caroliniana

The Carolina Hemlock (Tsuga caroliniana) is a pyramidal coniferous tree native to the South Eastern United States and used extensively in landscapes and gardens. This tree really should be used as a full size specimen. It is quickly becoming endangered by development, air polution, and the wooly adelgid. This plant is differentiated from Tsuga canadensis by the needles that encirle the stem. The wooly adelgid (an insect) is ravaging the species in the Southern Appalachians. This variety is more tolerant than Tsuga canadensis, but not immune. The native species is most common in production.
