California Fan Palm - Washingtonia filifera

The California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera) is a large palm tree native to the Southwest ideal for landscapes, gardens, street trees and naturalizing. This is one of the bulkier Palms iconic of Southern California. It has a larger head than most and the dead leaves form a distincitive skirt that is attractive and protects the trunk from freezes in zones 8 and 9. The flowers are very inconspiuous and rarely noticed. This is also one of the thornier Palms. The native species is most common in production.
