Winged Prickly Ash - Zanthoxylum planispinum

The Winged Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum planispinum) is a deciduous thicket forming tree or shrub found in woodlands throughout Eastern North America. This is about the only Prickly Ash with any aesthetic value, and that is the berry in winter. It gets the "Winged" name from the flat spines, not winged bark. This species is often confused with wild rose due to the thorny sprawling habit. The native species is most common, but rarely in production.
